How do I know which filler or neuromodulator to use?

If you are aging, have wrinkles on your face, or have lost volume in any parts of your face, chances are you have thought about how you can reverse the clock to rejuvenate your face back to its soft smooth youthful appearance!

As you dive deeper into learning about treatment options, you will quickly learn that fillers and neuromodulators are two of the top tools used for facial rejuvenation. Not only are they much safer and less invasive than traditional plastic surgery, but stunning results are nearly immediate and much more cost-effective.

But if you’re like most people who are newer to this topic, you’re probably asking, “how do I know which filler or neuromodulator to use to reverse signs of aging?”

Filler and neuromodulators are different from each other, but they are complementary and many times used during the same treatment. This takes typically about 30-40 minutes to perform and that includes consent forms, taking baseline photos, explaining the procedure and post-treatment instructions, and finally the procedure. In recent years, filler and neuromodulators have gained popularity among many.

In this article we will explain the difference between fillers and neuromodulators, however, we strongly recommend to just schedule a complimentary consultation with us so that we can discuss your goals and recommend a treatment plan that is right for you!

What are neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators, like Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau, are a type of injectable to relax dynamic expression lines like frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. This causes the muscles to relax, weakening the contraction of the muscles that lead to wrinkles. In another blog, we explain the difference between Botox, Xeomin, Dysport & Jeuveau.

Neuromodulators are applied mostly around the upper part of the face, like the eyes, frown lines, and forehead. There are other areas neuromodulators can treat such as bunny lines on the nose, laxity of the jawline, and chin dimpling. The result of neuromodulators lasts for about 3-4 months on average.

What are fillers?

Fillers, also known as dermal fillers or lip fillers are a type of injectable that replace lost volume in the temples, cheeks, nasolabial folds, jawline, and chin. With age, people lose collagen, muscle, bone, and fat from under the skin. Collagen and fat are responsible for making the skin look younger and tighter. As these start to disappear, the skin loses its elasticity and texture leading to wrinkles and loose skin. The most common fillers on the market today are hyaluronic acid gels which are a natural sugar substance found in our body. The molecular structure of these fillers is cross-linked in such a way that they don’t cause reactions and are very safe to use in the hands of a well-trained injector.

Dermal fillers are almost for the entire face but most commonly in the temples, cheeks, and lower face.  Depending on the specific fillers used they last longer than neuromodulators, ranging from 4-12 months.

We are often asked, “is getting dermal fillers painful?”, and although they can be slightly uncomfortable, we take precautions like using numbing agents and ice to prevent any discomfort. Often when someone says it was painful, it had more to do with the technique that the aesthetic nurse injector used. With over 20,000 face and lip injections successfully completed at BabyFace, most of our patients finish a treatment and say, “that wasn’t bad at all!”

Which neuromodulator do I use?

It can be confusing to choose one from among the various neuromodulator brands. That is why our trained nurse injectors spend time assessing each patient to determine which treatment is right for each individual.  Botox has been in the U.S. market for seventeen years and is approved by 17 countries. Also, it is the most researched brand among the three. So, it is a safe choice to go with. Botox shows results in 2 weeks that last for about 3 to 4 months.

Dysport has been in the U.S. for 10 years and is approved by 69 countries. There are also 25 years of clinical experience data available on it. Dysport can show results in only one to three days and can last for three to five months.

Another phenomenal brand, Jeuveau has been in the U.S. market since the FDA approved it in February 2019.

Xeomin has been FDA-approved since August of 2010 and offers similarly outstanding results to Botox.

Although these various neuromodulators have many similarities, there are distinct differences that only an experienced medspa nurse injector would know based on their experience treating many patients.

At BabyFace, Leigh Asher and her team’s experience is considerably more than most injectors in Scottsdale and even around the US, with nearly 20 years as an aesthetic nurse injector and trainer!  Your best bet is to come in for a complimentary consultation where we ask questions and discuss your desired outcomes so that we can guide you to the best treatment option to suit your goals.

Which dermal filler or lip filler do I use?

There are several types of dermal fillers:

  • Sculptra, Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), is a biostimulating product that helps your body to create its own collagen. This filler is used to smooth deep wrinkles on your face.

  • The longest-lasting filler on the market today is Bellafill with clinical studies that show it can last 5 years.

  • However, the most popular filler is made from Hyaluronic acid (HA).

It is best to discuss your goals with your Scottsdale MedSpa provider during an initial consultation. They will ask questions to determine your desired outcome, measure and evaluate your face and select the right type of dermal filler for you.

In conclusion —

Neuromodulators and dermal fillers are used to give you younger-looking skin. These procedures are safe and give you quick results. Although they won’t stop you from aging (wouldn’t that be nice!), they help hide signs of aging and restore a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

It is important to get these procedures done by an expert Aesthetic Nurse Injector, such as the incredibly talented team here at BabyFace that is trusted by thousands of beauties in Scottsdale, and even some who fly in from other states because they only trust us with their face!
